UBS general counsel Peter Kurer has been confirmed as the new chairman of the Swiss banking giant following its annual general meeting yesterday (23 April). Kurer, who has been acting as chairman of the board in an interim capacity, takes up the top role with immediate effect, his appointment having been approved with 87% of the vote. Shareholders additionally voted to reduce the terms of the board of directors from three years to just one.

Slaughter and May and Linklaters have bagged the lead advisory roles on the agreement between Banco Santander and GE Money to swap European assets worth a combined value of around €2bn (£1.58bn). Slaughters took the lead for General Electric's finance arm as it reached a preliminary agreement yesterday to acquire Italian bank Interbanca from Santander. Linklaters led for the Spanish banking giant, which under the agreement will acquire the GE Money businesses in Germany, Finland and Austria, as well as its credit card and auto-financing businesses in the UK.

Olswang has hired an eight-lawyer team from Linklaters as the fall-out from the magic circle firm's German restructuring continues. Linklaters partners Stefan Lutje and Georg von Wallis join Olswang's Berlin office as partners in the media, communications and technology (MCT) practice. They are joined by Viola Bensinger, who will become a partner on joining the firm, and five associates.
