Trio of northern chambers set for merger creating 250-barrister set

St Johns Buildings, Paradise Chambers and India Buildings Chambers are set to merge to create one of the UK's largest sets. The trio have agreed to join forces, with a tie-up likely to take place by the spring. The combined set will be known as St Johns Buildings and will consist of 250 barristers, including 12 QCs, as well as 70 support staff.

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has strengthened its regulatory practice with the hire of Daren Allen from DLA Piper. Allen joined the UK top 20 firm earlier this week (4 January) as a partner in its disputes group. He served as a partner within DLA Piper's litigation and regulation group and headed up the national firm's financial services team until his departure at the end of December.

Norton Rose recruits Freshfields Moscow disputes chief

Norton Rose has hired the head of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Moscow dispute resolution practice, Yaroslav Klimov. Klimov, who was a counsel at Freshfields, joined Norton Rose on 1 January as a partner and the firm's first Moscow and CIS disputes head. He specialises in general commercial, corporate, regulatory and product liability litigation. The hire takes the partner count in Norton Rose's Moscow office to seven. Klimov is also set to be joined by an associate from Freshfields.

Beachcroft is set to launch its first office in Asia, with the opening of a base in Singapore. City insurance partner Ben Nicholson is relocating to Singapore to lead the office, which will open in February and will advise clients on complex and high value commercial disputes, with a particular focus on insurers and reinsurers. Ashurst has closed down its intellectual property (IP) litigation practice following the departure of its sole partner Ian Starr. Starr will join IP boutique D Young & Co on 1 January alongside senior associate Tamsin Holman, who will become a partner at the firm. They will also be joined by junior associates Cam Gatta and Anna Reid and two secretaries. Prior to joining Ashurst in 1993, Starr had been a partner at Clifford Chance (CC) since 1984. His practice focuses on the protection, enforcement and licensing of IP and related technology rights.

The suit against Orrick alleges that the US firm interfered with Coudert's business and aided and abetted in partners' breach of their fiduciary duty.

Howrey litigation co-chair Gary Bendinger and two other partners are set to join Sidley Austin, reports The Am Law Daily. New York litigation partners Gregory Ballard and Kevin Burke will join Bendinger at Sidley. The trio have extensive experience representing accounting firms in liability litigation. Sidley litigation partner Charles Douglas, chair of the firm's executive committee, said in a statement: "Gary, Greg, and Kevin are each respected and experienced litigators. They join our extremely active accountants liability practice and will enable us to significantly expand its scope in New York and throughout the world."
