Liverpool FC's former owners are set for a return to the High Court in the latest twist in the long-running saga over the takeover of the football club. Tribunal overrules unfair dismissal claims for fixed-share partners

Fixed-share partners are unable to bring unfair dismissal claims, according to a recent ruling in the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT). The tribunal this month upheld an earlier ruling that claimant Martin Tiffin, formerly of Bournemouth-based law firm Lester Aldridge, was classified as a partner of the firm and not an employee, and was therefore unable to claim unfair dismissal.

The future of the Bar: A profession reborn for today

Complacency is not, and never has been, an option. The market for the supply of legal services moves constantly, quickly and is ever more demanding. Stand still and the Bar will be left behind. Embrace change and modernisation and it will flourish. Complacency and smugness have from time to time been jibes directed at the Bar, and, in particular, at the Chancery and commercial Bars. Old-fashioned is another claim; old-fashioned, that is, in the law applied, in the premises from which the Bar operates, in the organisation of the way in which chambers are managed and in the manner in which it provides its services.

The future of the Bar: Inner court to outer reaches

The modern day barrister is as likely to be boarding an aeroplane at Heathrow to represent a client in the Middle East or the Caribbean as he or she is to be catching the Eurostar to appear in the European Court of Justice, or indeed walking down to the local courts to appear as an advocate in a trial in England and Wales. Similarly, a barrister advising his or her client as to the risks involved in a proposed business endeavour, or in relation to a child abduction case, is as likely to be providing that advice in a conference in London or Cardiff, be sending the advice by email or participating in a video link-up with Moscow or Singapore.

US-style success fees - a controversy waiting to happen

How do you float a policy that can be so easily caricatured as bringing US litigation culture to these shores without an almighty row breaking out? Well, the coalition Government, having been lent a helping hand by Lord Justice Jackson's report on civil litigation costs and the state of the public finances, has found the answer - announcing the measure as part of reforms that will yank hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayer money out of the justice system. In delivering policy, as ever, it's all about the mood music.

A vision for the future: the Bar in 10 years' time

There comes a point when change is swirling around with such force that the only thing to do is to stand back and look beyond the storm. This has been my reaction to the crisis in public affairs which has beset Government as a result of the recession and growth in public debt. This impacts prejudicially not only upon legal aid spend but also on the private sector which, directly and indirectly, is hit by the contraction in the purchase of goods and services.
