Barlow Litigation Team Defects to Mayer Brown

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has been hit by the departure for Mayer Brown of commercial litigation head Clare Canning and two junior litigation partners. Canning is best-known for leading Barlows' successful defense of Ernst & Young in the four-year Equitable Life litigation. The departures leave five partners focused specifically on commercial litigation.

BLP Downgrades Alliance With Kramer Levin

Berwin Leighton Paisner has downgraded its formal alliance with New York ally Kramer Levin after a five-year exclusive referral relationship. By mutual agreement, the firms have agreed that the status of the relationship was of a non-exclusive "preferred firm," of which BLP has about 100 globally. Said a head of a rival firm: "I suspect BLP is looking to move up the food chain in the U.S. and probably wants to associate with a firm that generates more sophisticated work."

Sullivan, Skadden Emerge as Top U.S. Firms in European M&A

Sullivan & Cromwell and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom have emerged as the top U.S. law firms in European M&A over the last three years, according to research produced for Legal Week that shows the pair have worked on the highest value of deals over the period. Sullivan ranked first in the value tables for U.K. and Europe, advising on 173 European deals worth a total value of $1.2 trillion since November 2004 and 60 deals worth a total of $357.5 billion in the U.K.

Boom Time for U.K. Firms

It's boom time in London, as U.K. firms begin to report provisional revenue figures for the last financial year, which for the majority of firms ended on April 30. Most firms have yet to report profits per partner figures, although early indications suggest that U.K. partners will have no reason to complain. "We've never known a year like this one where there is no countercyclical offset," says Nigel Moreland, financial director of 700-lawyer Ashurst. "Every practice area in the firm has performed."

City of San Diego Sues Willkie Farr for $29 Million

The San Diego city attorney's office has sued Willkie Farr & Gallagher for $29.3 million related to the law firm's handling of an investigation into the city's underfunded pension plan. The city claims Willkie Farr attorneys duplicated much of the investigation work already conducted by Kroll Inc. into the pension fund's $2 billion shortfall, that it knowingly overbilled the city by some $9.7 million and that it breached its agreement regarding the work it would provide.

Sullivan's Plapinger Hands London Reins to New Co-Heads

Sullivan & Cromwell has appointed new London management, with partners Vanessa Blackmore and Robert Schlein stepping up to lead the elite Manhattan firm's U.K. base. The two have been named co-managing partners of Sullivan's London office, taking over from veteran chief William Plapinger, who has headed the office for the past 13 years. Plapinger will remain in London and is to continue in his role coordinating the firm's network of European offices, which also includes outposts in Paris and Frankfurt.

Litigation Against Major Companies Flagging, In-House Survey Shows

Fewer major U.S. corporations are being sued this year than last, a new study finds. Seventeen percent of corporate counsel surveyed got through the 12-month period ending in June without being sued, up from 11 percent in the prior 12 months, according to the report by Fulbright & Jaworski. The survey also showed a decline in the number of regulatory actions against U.S. companies as well as a reduction in internal investigations requiring outside counsel. And in-house counsel see the trend continuing.
