Fish & Richardson Successfully Defends Medical Patents
Fish & Richardson attorneys have won a decisive patent defense victory for Fresenius Medical Care, a maker of dialysis machines. A California jury deliberated less than one full day and invalidated all four of the patents being asserted by Baxter International against Fresenius. Baxter was seeking $87 million in damages from Fresenius for patent infringement associated with the "Fresenius 2008K" hemodialysis machine and an injunction barring Fresenius from continuing to sell the unit.Library Revolutionary Frederick Kilgour Dies
Frederick Kilgour, a professor who revolutionized the way libraries store and share data, died at the age of 92, according to the Online Computer Library Center, which he founded in Dublin, Ohio. Kilgour had spent 30 years as an academic librarian and historian of science and technology at Harvard and Yale when he was hired in 1967 by the Ohio College Association to establish WorldCat, the world's first computerized library network.Virginia Law Firm Opens N.Y. New York-based Proskauer Rose has hired William Yonge as partner for its recently opened London office, taking him from McDermott Will & Emery's financial services team. The latest move means McDermott has lost more than a dozen partners in London during the past 18 months. Proskauer launched its London office last year with the hire of O'Melveny & Myers' former London head. The London office is Proskauer's 10th branch globally and its second in Europe after its Paris office.Kelley Drye's D.C. Partners Favor Merger With Collier Shannon
Partners in the Washington, D.C., office of New York's Kelley Drye & Warren voted Friday to merge with Collier Shannon Scott, an 80-lawyer Washington firm. Collier Shannon partners also voted in favor of the deal, which still requires the approval of Kelley Drye's New York partners, who are set to vote this evening. Kelley Drye Chairman John M. Lawyers' Salaries Projected to Rise 5.4 Percent
Average starting salaries for attorneys are expected to rise 5.4 percent in 2008, according to Robert Half Legal. First-year associates at firms with 75 attorneys or more will see the biggest gain of 9.1 percent. Attorneys with one to three years of experience at large law firms can expect to earn between $114,000 and $147,500 each year. And senior attorneys with 10 or more years of experience at large firms will see starting salaries climb to the range of $167,500 to $234,000 annually.2006 Bonuses Hold Steady at Milbank, Cadwalader and Cravath
New York associates' bonus season opened Friday when Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy announced it would pay bonuses ranging from $30,000 for first-years to $65,000 for senior associates. Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft announced the same range Monday, while Cravath, Swaine & Moore announced a bonus ranging from $30,000 for first-years to $60,000 for senior associates. The bonuses, the same as the firms paid in 2005, cap a year in which most major New York firms raised base salaries by $20,000 across the board.Minority Students Still Hindered at U.K.'s Top Law Firms
Minority and female students are still struggling to make their way into the U.K.'s top law firms, despite attempts by commercial practices to tackle diversity. An annual survey has found that while 25 percent of Legal Practice Course students are from minorities, just 18 percent of training contracts are being taken by those from minority backgrounds. The research also underlines apparent gender bias in the profession, with male students more likely to have already secured training contracts than females.Trustee Says Pillsbury Should Return Fees
Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman is one step closer to being forced to return about $4 million to a former client. The Chapter 11 trustee for SonicBlue filed a statement on Tuesday supporting a motion, filed by SonicBlue, asking Pillsbury to pay back the fees. Trustee Dennis J. Connolly also suggested that the judge hold off on setting an amount so that other issues such as interest or even potential damages could be considered.Bracewell & Giuliani Adds Winstead Corporate and Securities Lawyers
Bracewell & Giuliani has hired three lawyers from Winstead in Dallas, including Bruce Cheatham, who had been head of Winstead's corporate and securities section.
