Fulbright Adds Teams in Beijing, Hong Kong
Fulbright & Jaworski has added a team of lawyers in Beijing and Hong Kong, strengthening its Asia presence. Partner Steve Vogel has relocated to Hong Kong from the firm's London office. Also joining the firm in Hong Kong are senior associate Ben Smith and counsel Alexandra "Sasha" Freeman. After reports a couple of weeks ago that New York-based Dewey Ballantine was looking to collaborate with Galgano, a Bologna, Italy-based law firm, Dewey announced it's official. Former Milberg, Weiss & Bershad partner Steven Schulman expanded his motion to dismiss some of the criminal charges against him with additional court filings last week. Schulman and another Milberg Weiss partner, David Bershad, were indicted in Los Angeles last year on charges they made $216 million in attorney fees by paying kickbacks to lead plaintiffs. Schulman's most recent filing seeks to dismiss counts of "honest services fraud" relating to four federal cases in which he is linked in the indictment.Cadwalader Follows U.S. Associate Losses With London Support Staff Cuts
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has made a round of redundancies in London, following its announcement that 35 of its U.S. lawyers would be cut in the wake of faltering debt markets. Winston & Strawn has lost New York partners to two other firms. Olshan Grundman Frome Rosenzweig & Wolosky announced Tuesday that it was launching an employee benefits practice to be led by former Winston & Strawn partner Manes M. Merrit. In a separate move, Seyfarth Shaw has recruited Winston & Strawn corporate partner Marvin J. Miller.Partners Negotiate Future as Linklaters Axes Cologne Arm
Linklaters is to axe its Cologne, Germany, office following the Magic Circle firm's decision to launch in Duesseldorf, the firm announced Tuesday. Only 10 of the office's 24 partners will relocate to Duesseldorf, with the rest in negotiations over their future. All the associates in the firm's 110-lawyer Cologne office have received offers to transfer to another office. U.K. firms have traditionally avoided having a presence in both Cologne and Duesseldorf, which are within 40 miles of each other.Former Freshfields Partner Won't Appeal Age Bias Ruling, Firm Drops Costs Threat
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has dropped its costs claim against former partner Peter Bloxham following his announcement that he will not appeal an age discrimination ruling acquitting the Magic Circle firm. Attorneys for Freshfields' former head of restructuring said they believed there are "potential grounds of appeal" but that Bloxham is "mindful that any appeal to the Employment Appeal Tribunal may well be protracted and may not bring the case to an end for either party, whatever its outcome."Latham & Watkins Private Equity Head Joins Cadwalader
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has recruited the global head of the private equity practice at Latham & Watkins to head its own practice. R. Ronald Hopkinson has represented major private equity firms, including the Carlyle Group and Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, on a number of high-profile, multibillion-dollar deals. Slumping credit markets recently forced Cadwalader to lay off 35 associates, but Hopkinson said he was focused on the long term and undeterred by current market conditions.Publicly Listed Australian Law Firm Makes More Acquisitions
Australia's Slater & Gordon -- the world's first publicly owned law firm -- has continued its aggressive expansion drive with the acquisition of three regional firms. The $4.4 million deal, announced Nov. 22, will see the firm acquire Crane Butcher McKinnon and Nagle & McGuire in New South Wales as well as Edwin Abdo & Associates in Western Australia, extending Slater's offices network to a total of 24.
