Gibson Bags Rare Latham Lateral
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has succeeded in snagging a corporate partner from Latham & Watkins, a firm known for its tight grip on its partnership. David Hernand made partner at Latham in the late 1990s, and worked on tech M&A deals for the firm, such as representing New Horizon Interactive in its $350 million sale to Disney. "Latham has a deep bench in Southern California of attorneys who do what I do, and it occurred to me that there might be an opportunity to make more of an impact at Gibson," he said.Freshfields Ruling Could Help Enforce Lockstep at U.K. Firms
U.K. partnerships could enjoy greater flexibility in enforcing lockstep following Wednesday's long-awaited judgment on Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's age discrimination case, employment lawyers believe. Freshfields' victory in the high-profile age discrimination case helps clarify some of the potentially discriminatory issues surrounding the use of lockstep, according to many partners. The case is being scrutinized as the first real test for partnerships of the U.K.'s new age discrimination laws.Holland & Knight Names Executive Partner for Fla. Office
Martin Alexander has been named executive partner in the West Palm Beach, Fla., office of Holland & Knight. One of the founding partners of that office, Alexander practices general commercial and corporate litigation. Addison, Texas-based Barrett Burke Wilson Castle Daffin & Frappier has selected Mary Daffin as managing partner of the firm. Daffin, who is African-American, says she believes that being good at what you do is what makes women and minority attorneys successful in a profession that is largely male -- and largely white. Although Daffin says she hasn't run across any other African-American female managing partners in Texas, she'd "love to have a network of other African-American women who do this."Kirkland Sends Gay and Lesbian Law Students to D.C.
Kirkland & Ellis can teach a lesson or two to other law firms about how to shed a conservative, stodgy image. The 1,100-lawyer firm recently went all out helping a San Francisco Bay Area gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender law group send several dozen law students to the National Lavender Law recruiting event in Washington, D.C. Kirkland's responsiveness could probably be attributed to its recently revamped diversity program, which now includes an LGBT subcommittee.View more book results for the query "*"
Debevoise, Simpson Thacher Match Cravath Bonuses
Two more New York law firms have followed Cravath, Swaine & Moore in announcing year-end and one-time special bonuses for associates. Another firm has entered the already-saturated San Francisco law firm market. St. Louis-based Bryan Cave, which was No. 61 on last year's Am Law 100 rankings, announced the firm's San Francisco move on Monday. The new office is the firm's third in California, after Los Angeles and Irvine. The firm already has more than 100 attorneys based in the state, some of whom work with Bay Area clients.Lawyer Sought for Sex With Underage Girls Arrested at Hotel
A former Cravath, Swaine & Moore associate fleeing rape charges was arrested Friday morning at a New York hotel. Tax lawyer James P. Colliton, 41, was indicted on charges he regularly paid two underage girls for sex. One of the girls, who was 13 at the time, allegedly moved into Colliton's Manhattan apartment, which he maintained in addition to the house where his wife and five children lived. The girls' mother, who Colliton allegedly paid for access to her daughters, was also in custody.Sullivan & Cromwell Is Latest Firm to Match Bonuses
Sullivan & Cromwell on Monday became the latest firm to match the bonus range announced last week by Cravath, Swaine & Moore, which said it would pay both year-end and one-time "special" bonuses to associates totalling $45,000 for first-years and going up to $110,000 for senior associates. Several other firms have also matched the Cravath bonus, including Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; Debevoise & Plimpton; Davis Polk & Wardwell; Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy; and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.Cadwalader Bolsters Fledgling IP Practice
