Winter Break In New Orleans

More than 500 law students from 28 campuses across the country headed south this winter during the semester break to again assist communities in Louisiana and Mississippi that remain devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This year�s crop of students are a mix of first-time volunteers and veterans of two previous direct action efforts by the Student Hurricane Network, a national group begun in New York in the wake of the 2005 killer storms along the Gulf Coast.

Judge Allows City to Sue Gun Makers Despite Federal Law

Gary, Ind.'s lawsuit against gun manufacturers and local dealers survived a potential setback when a judge ruled unconstitutional a year-old federal law shielding gun makers from lawsuits. Judge Robert A. Pete denied a request to dismiss the city's claim alleging gun makers do little to control the flow of handguns used in crimes. The federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act became law in response to a wave of lawsuits from cities, but Pete ruled the law would deprive Gary of due process rights.
