Allen & Overy, Australia's Mallesons Stephen Jaques and New Zealand's Simpson Grierson are advising UK energy giant BG Group on its $13bn (£6.6bn) hostile takeover bid for Origin Energy, Australia's second-largest energy company, The American Lawyer has reported.Clayton Utz is representing Origin, which has advised its shareholders to take no action on the bid.

Herbert Smith names new Singapore chief

Herbert Smith has appointed Austin Sweeney as the new head of its Singapore office, with the corporate partner relocating from the firm's City base to take up the management role. Sweeney will begin in his new post on 1 August for a three-year term. He takes over the reins from corporate partner Veronica O'Shea, who has managed the firm's Singapore office since 2004. She will return to full-time client work with a brief to develop the corporate practice in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

Norton Rose has landed a place on China Development Bank's (CDB's) legal panel, joining 10 other firms on the sovereign wealth fund's roster. The firm won a place after advising CDB on its investment in Barclays in 2007. DLA ally Cliffe Dekker seals tie-up with SA rival

Cliffe Dekker, the South African ally of DLA Piper, is to merge with local rival Hofmeyr Herbstein & Gihwala, in a deal that is set to create the country's largest law firm. The combined firm will operate as Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr from September, boasting 127 partners in Johannesburg and Capetown. It is thought the combined practice will be the largest law firm in South Africa, with Cliffe Dekker contributing 65 and 62 hailing from Hofmeyr.
