CC bolsters India capital markets practice

Clifford Chance (CC) has recruited capital markets partner Rahul Guptan from Indian law firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. Guptan will join CC's Singapore arm and India group, bringing the total number of lawyers in the group to 195 across the firm's international offices.The hire follows the magic circle firm's launch of a securities and capital markets group in Singapore at the beginning of the year.

The Philadelphia-based firm revealed today (15 August) that its licence application to open an office in Beijing has been approved. The firm has bought in corporate and financial services partner, Luke Gannon, to lead its funds practice throughout Asia from DLA's office in Hong Kong.Gannon arrives from Australian firm Freehills, where he was also head of funds. He has been a partner for eight years.

O'Melveny & Myers has launched an office in Singapore with the hire of White & Case's Asia head of banking, finance and restructuring Bertie Mehigan as its managing partner. Mehigan joined O'Melveny earlier this week along with finance and restructuring partner Huey Yann Thong.The Singapore launch marks the fifth Asian office for O'Melveny, in addition to the firm's bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The new office has been launched to serve as a gateway to south Asian markets such as India, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The fears come despite expectations that this autumn the Indian Government will pass a long-awaited bill allowing limited liability partnerships (LLPs) and lifting the country's 20-partner limit. A hearing concerning international firms' right to practise foreign law in the country is also expected to take place over the summer, months before the election is scheduled to take place next spring.
