Magnusson boosts Warsaw with A&O raid

Swedish firm Magnusson has beefed up its Warsaw banking and finance capabilities with the hire of former Allen & Overy (A&O) lawyer Wojciech Wadolowski. Wadolowski headed the local finance practices of A&O and CMS Cameron McKenna and has been practising on a standalone basis since he left Camerons. Wadolowski also helped establish CC's Poland arm in 1990.

BA calls in Slaughters and Uria for Iberia bid

Slaughter and May has joined Spanish 'best friend' Uria Menendez to advise British Airways (BA) as it prepares to make an offer for Spanish national airline Iberia, it was announced today (23 May). BA, which currently holds a 10% stake in Iberia, has joined a consortium that includes US private equity fund TPG Capital and Spanish funds Vista Capital, Inversiones Ibersuizas and Quercus Equity. A formal approach is expected is the coming months.

Taylor Wessing has begun rebuilding its Berlin office with the hire of corporate partner Marc-Oliver Kurth from local rival Hoffmann Liebs Fritsch & Partner. Kurth, a partner in Hoffmann Liebs' Berlin office since 2004, will join in June as a partner in the corporate department, specialising in capital markets and M&A work. The hire follows the departure of a six-partner team in December that quit the firm for US practice Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham.

Herbert Smith finance partner Alexander Currie is relocating to the top 10 London firm's Moscow office. Currie has 12 years' finance experience and focuses on projects work. The move follows the recent expansion of the office's corporate offering with the hires of M&A lawyer Alexei Roudiak and tax specialist Oleg Konnov from Salans. Herbert Smith's Moscow practice now has six partners and 26 other fee earners.

Olswang boosts Berlin with Freshfields recruits

Olswang has beefed up its fledgling Berlin operation with the addition of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer associates Istvan Szabados and Johannes Kramer. Szabados focuses on transactional property work and has advised a number of investors, including Morgan Stanley Real Estate Fund, Merrill Lynch and Blackstone, while Kramer specialises in privatisations and public procurement procedures. Olswang opened its Berlin branch in January with around 13 lawyers.

CC to pull the plug on seven-lawyer Padua office

Clifford Chance (CC) is to pull the plug on its Padua outpost in the northeast of Italy, with a number of the team set to relocate to its office in Milan. The closure is due to take place by the end of July. The seven-lawyer Padua team will be offered the chance to relocate to the City giant's Milan branch, which currently numbers around 120 lawyers and is headed by local managing partner Charles Adams. It is not yet known whether the entire team will make the switch.
