Three associates have left Linklaters' Portuguese arm after the firm discovered their plans to set up the office of an incoming international rival. The three associates - banking lawyer Antonio Payan Martins, tax specialist Patrick De Werbe and capital markets lawyer Francisco Almeida - left the firm on Tuesday evening (8 May) after details of a business plan called 'Project Iberia' were found on a laptop, revealing how the lawyers were going to launch a Portugal office for an unnamed international firm.

Gomez-Acebo partner lands top Spanish bar role

Joaquin Garcia-Romanillos Valverde, a partner at Spanish independent Gomez-Acebo & Pombo, has been appointed as Secretary General to the General Council of the Spanish Bars (CGAE), it was announced today (9 May). The dispute resolution partner, who has been a CGAE councilor, was appointed as Secretary General to the CGAE this week, replacing Jose Luis Segimon Escobedo in the role. Escobedo had held the position for just under 10 years.

Clifford Chance (CC) has beefed up its European practice with hires from magic circle rivals Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy (A&O), the City giant announced today (8 May). CMS Hasche Sigle, the German ally of CMS Cameron McKenna, has beefed up its patent law practice with the hire of a partner from Linklaters, it was announced yesterday (7 May). Markus Deck, whose practice focuses on areas including forensic and advisory patents work, technology transfer and trade mark litigation, will join Hasche Sigle's Duesseldorf arm in June. Clients he has previously advised include Otis, Black & Decker, Tupperware and Wyeth.
