Clifford Chance (CC) Duesseldorf competition partner Marc Besen and Linklaters UK private equity partner Richard Youle have been named as Europe's most active deal-doers for 2007, according to Mergermarket. Individual rankings produced for Legal Week show Besen and Youle have both advised on 15 M&A deals over the calendar year, with both acting on deals worth a combined value of slightly less than €5bn (£3.59bn).

Herbert Smith has bolstered its Paris office with the hire of an arbitration partner. Jennifer Kirby is set to join the firm in the New Year from the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration (ICC) where she is currently deputy secretary general.

Shearman & Sterling's Frankfurt managing partner, Stephen Hutter, is standing down from the management position to take on a new role as head of the firm's Europe & Asia capital markets practice. Hutter, who joined the Frankfurt office in 1992 and has headed up the local operation since 1995, will take on the new role on 1 January, 2008. Dusseldorf tax consultant Reinhard Stockum is expected to replace him as head of the Frankfurt office.

DLA Piper has named Bruce Mee as its regional managing partner for France, as the Paris office expands with a brace of new partners. Mee, who currently heads DLA Piper's local litigation and arbitration practice, is set to take over as local managing partner from Alan Cariddi, who steps down after more than 25 years in the role. Cariddi will remain at the transatlantic giant in a new role, working across its network of offices to manage multi-jurisdictional instructions.
