Howrey has hired the name partner of French litigation boutique Hauteclocque Larroumet & Associes, former Lovells partner Jean de Hauteclocque, in a boost for the US firm's Paris arm. De Hauteclocque joined the Washington DC-based intellectual property (IP) leader earlier this week as a partner.

Linklaters is acting for longstanding client RBS on the bank's approach for Dutch rival ABN Amro. The magic circle firm - the bank's main corporate counsel for a number of years - is understood to be fielding a team that includes Dutch corporate partner Peter Goes. The firm's main relationship partner for RBS in London is restructuring head Robert Elliott, while corporate partners Matthew Middleditch and Anne Drummond also handle work for the client.

The European Commission (EC) has outlined its vision for a unified European patent court, proposing a compromise between plans first proposed by the European Patent Litigation Agreement (EPLA) and its own community patent model. The EC today (3 April) recommended the creation of a unified patent system that draws strongly from the model laid out in the EPLA - the blueprint originally drawn up by lawyers and industry practitioners in 1999 and backed by many of Europe's leading intellectual property (IP) judges in 2005.

The promotions, which will take effect from 1 May, include five appointments in Asia and four in Paris, with the firm's largest operations - in London and Germany - seeing five and four promotions respectively.
